ABOUT SENTRY
SENTRY is a 48-month project funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe uniting 21 partners across 7 European countries.
SENTRY is itself a continuation and a direct success story of VECTORGUARD, the RIF Bridge2Horizon-funded project that first proved real-time, low-cost airborne pathogen detection was achievable at proof-of-concept stage. The validated prototype and the new collaboration model it established between Cypriot R&D companies became the technical and strategic foundation on which the SENTRY consortium was built, and its demonstrated feasibility was instrumental in securing SENTRY’s Horizon Europe funding. The VectorGuard device now advances within SENTRY from proof-of-concept into a field-deployed component of a far larger surveillance and risk-management system.
The aim of the project is to develop and validate an integrated portfolio of measures lke biocontrols, nanobubbles, UV-C sanitation, antimicrobial packaging and cold plasma that are embedded in ISPM-14-aligned protocols and complemented by autonomous airborne molecular diagnostics, environmental sensing, metagenomics, digital-twin modelling and AI-powered decision support. Multi-country pilots will capture agro-climatic and socio-economic variability, while co-creation with farmers, cooperatives, SMEs and policy actors secures usability, compliance and certification readiness.
The improvements delivered through SENTRY will raise the technology readiness of the VectorGuard detection device and its surrounding digital infrastructure to field-validated, deployment-ready levels, while generating harmonised protocols, FAIR datasets and adoption toolkits suitable for scale-up across crops and regions.
