ABOUT MOLECULAR COLONOSCOPY (MOCO) PROJECT

The MOCO project falls within the broader Cyprus Intestinal Health Study (CyIHS) which aims to understand and characterize Gut Microbiota of the Cypriot population as a means for preventing the development of colorectal neoplasias.

The clinical study has collected blood, tissue and faecal samples from over 320 individuals along with medical history, lifestyle and dietary information. Individuals at high-risk of colorectal cancer were identified based on the number of adenomas or polyps counted in the colon during routine colonoscopy. Multi-omics analytics were carried out using metagenomic sequencing analysis of bacterial DNA and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis of faecal metabolites. This information will assist in the development of faecal biomarkers of colorectal cancer which could replace the more invasive and costly colonoscopy screening procedures.

The project results have been published in high-impact scientific journals.
